Friday night is movie night! So let’s talk about a movie I went to see last Friday, and basically the whole world went to see in its first week – which made it break so many Box Office Records, it would bore you if I’d list them all. One of them though, was having the highest-grossing weekend of all time (nationally and internationally). Which was a record „Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2“ had been holding since 2011. I’m not sure how I feel about that.
Anyway, „Jurassic World“:
Humans build Dinosaur theme park.
Humans build new Dinosaur.
New Dinosaur is cleverer than humans.
Dinosaur eats humans.
Old Dinosaurs eat new Dinosaur.
„But, but, but…. it’s so much more“, you might say. And I agree. But let’s be honest. The inner child of all of us came out this week, and just by seeing these doors open again, it got all „jump-up-and-down-in-your-seat“ excited. When I was in the theatre, the front row was full of actual little boys, but the adult little boys in the rest of the theatre seemed much, much more excited about the new „Dinosaur movie“. Which is awesome, and probably why the movie is doing so well at the box office. It’s a movie for everyone, just like the old one was. (and by „old one“ I mean the very first movie, of course).
Let’s get one thing out of the way real quick, before I fangirl too much about „Jurassic World“: I didn’t love it 100%.
In my opinion, the ending was ridiculous. It felt a bit like the writers wrote themselves into a corner, and got out the T-Rex and a whale thing to help them end the movie quickly and abruptly. Of course, it was an awesome looking fight scene, but it could have been done better to make more sense.
Also, they tried too hard to make it a movie for everyone by adding romance and that kiss… that wasn’t at the right place, at the right time, or in the right movie. I didn’t mind the romance, who wouldn’t fall for Raptor whisperer Owen? He was awesome. But that kiss was too much.
Everything else though… was just fantastic! It was real enough, so that I sat there and could not believe that a park like „Jurassic World“ doesn’t exist on a remote island somewhere. It felt like Disney Land, a place I imagine is really awesome, but could never afford to go to anyway. The rides, the shops, the marketing of it all, I can almost not imagine it’s not real. Even though I know they shot everything on Hawaii and probably never built any of it. *sad face*
Btw. speaking of the rides: yay Jimmy Fallon guest appearance! I almost jumped out of my seat, but then realized that no one in the German cinema recognized him, and it turned into a sad little inside joke nobody else was smiling about but me… ah well 🙂
The actual cast was amazing as well, every one of them. Jake Johnson, Bryce Dallas… and honestly, where has Chris Pratt been hiding all this time? I was most impressed with the two boys though, Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins. By their acting, and by the roles their characters played. I love it when a movie can be all SciFi and action packed, but deep down it’s still about relationships and family. Awesome acting and awesome story telling on this front!
My favourite thing was probably everyone else’s favourite thing as well: the Raptors and Owen the Raptor whisperer! I mean, the Indominous Rex (I-Rex ?) was awesome too, and the scariest bit of the movie, how clever he was et all… but I want a team of Raptors! I mean, they would eat me before I could even say „Raptor“, but still… Blue was awesome, and at one point or another I’ll probably and up buying myself one of those action figures… fangirl rambling just thinking about it, sorry!
All in all, the movie is amazing, with small flaws. If you’ve been hesitating, holding off on watching it because you loved the old one so much and you don’t want to ruin it… go and see „Jurassic World“. They’ve done an amazing job, and it’s doing the franchise justice, more than that even. And you know your inner child just wants you to go and see it. You have to. Just go!
